4 Ways You Can Prepare For A World Without The Internet

Can you imagine a world without the internet? Consumer Affairs posed the question What goes up when the Internet goes down?  In the infographic below they have some answer’s. I don’t think that the world will ever go without the internet for long. Humans like to be conceted. Many young adults have never known a time without the internet.

The internet we know today is based on APRAPNET and has been around since 1969. It was built to be resilient with redundancy. The info sent over the internet is broken into tiny pieces called packets that do not have to travel on the same route. At the end, they are reassembled. Not to geek out on my networking background. Not to even mention alternative networks like ServalMesh.

But it could be down in areas for periods of time. There are some takeaways you can learn from a world without the internet.

The Truth About Precious Metals for Survivalists

There are a few common misconceptions associated with precious metals and how they may not be helpful to a preparedness plan for either a SHTF scenario or potential economic collapse.

1. If I can’t eat it, drink it, or use it to defend myself, I don’t need it.

2. I’ll just get stuck buying some worthless coins and never get anything out of them.

Although these are some generally popular perspectives, they are completely misguided and incorrect.

So how can precious metals be useful for survivalists when the economy collapses?

The truth is, precious metals are essential for survivalists to help you stay prepared for all sorts of upcoming turmoil.

Below, you’ll find rebuttals to the common misconceptions about gold and silver and how they can literally save your life when the SHTF…

1. “If I can’t eat it, drink it, or use it to defend myself, I don’t need it.”

Precious metals have been used as a stable store of value and a medium of exchange for thousands of years. Although you cannot actually eat, drink or use it to defend yourself you can use it in barter or trade to get any potential needed items.

For example, if you are trying to trade with a neighbor for ammunition and you only have water, food, ammunition and first aid, chances are, he/she has those exact items also. You need to pay with something that can be used as a medium of exchange so that your neighbor can buy whatever he/she may need from someone else.

You won’t always know what people may need in a barter or trade situation. That’s why having a form of currency is essential!

2. “I’ll just get stuck buying some worthless coins and never get anything out of them.”

I say this to prospective precious metals buyers, it seems like, a thousand times a day:

“Stay away from collectible coins! Don’t do it!”

Collectible coins, or “numismatic coins,” are like art. Their value is largely subjective. Therefore some people might pay millions of dollars for the Mona Lisa. Personally, I wouldn’t pay 20 bucks for it!

Don’t put yourself in a hard spot to try to get a buyer who will pay as much as you did to get some mint special coin. The liquidity just isn’t there when compared to gold and silver coins, bars, and rounds that are traded at their melt value.

So Buy BULLION!

Bullion is the term that is used when trying to buy precious metals closest to the spot (sometimes called stock market) price. Ask your buyer, if they don’t have it listed, how much over spot you are paying per ounce. The price of gold and silver is fully transparent and can be determined by the clock around the world. Getting the lowest price per ounce is generally the smartest choice.

After the 2008 real-estate fiasco, the economy was trash! In 2011, however, silver jumped up to $40 an ounce even though the rest of the country and economy were still trying to pull themselves out of the grave. Precious metals are not only a good option for a survivalist perspective but they also help to hedge against inflation and perform well in periods of economic turmoil.

What You Need to Know for a Survivalist/SHTF Scenario

In a barter/trade situation, it’s important to remember that having different sizes and metals is always smart. Having Pre-65 junk silver is a great option, it is in smaller fractional sizes, and, because it is 90% silver (containing 10% copper), it will wear well being handled more frequently.

Silver rounds, especially in the smaller fractional sizes, is also an attractive option.  For larger barter situations consider getting some gold. Compared to silver coins fractional gold coins carry a larger amount of value in smaller sizes.

As a result of government racking up a national debt of over 19 TRILLION dollars and climbing, it’s time to start preparing for our currency to be obsolete in SHTF scenarios…

Finally remember: “You won’t always know what people may need in a barter or trade situation. That’s why having a form of currency is essential!”

Christmas Gift Picks

I’ve seen a few of the other Survival blogs put out some Christmas gift posts. I thought about doing one of similar items with amazon links. The more I thought about it though I decided that was not punk. I wanted to find small companies with unusual items. Granted some items are available on Amazon and if you buy it from there I make a few pennies that I use to buy gear for review.

I had a hard time finding great new survival products. I asked around and was told about a few. I searched on Kickstarter for more. Also things that I want or like are listed

Bugging In and Bugging Out – Are You Prepping for Both?

Bugging In and Bugging Out – Are You Prepping for Both?

Keep calm and Grab Your Bug Out Bag
Keep calm and Grab Your Bug Out Bag

Here’s what when people think about how the world is going to end: we all have an idea (or a fantasy, if you prefer) on the way things will go down when SHTF. We get fixated on one, maybe two disasters, we see with our mind’s eye and we decide on whether we’ll bug in or out.

Only problem is, there’s absolutely no way of knowing how things will go down, even if we nail the type of disaster that will hit. Some preppers are convinced they’ll bug in but how they came to that conclusion, I have no clue.

I’m not going to advocate one side or another. I would much rather see you open to the idea of both, based on the circumstances and the actual events that will unfold right before your eyes.

Here’s what you should do:

Step 1: take a long hard look at your current situation. Think about your location and the climate you are in, think about your financial situation, about all the survival skills you may or may not have and the people you have with you on board. Think about your stockpile, about your bug out location, your bug out vehicle and all the different routes to can take to bug out.

When you analyze your current situations from every angle, blind spots start showing up… which is a good thing because now you can start fixing them! Maybe you realize you’re a little overweight and you won’t be able to run for more than a mile with the BOB on your back. That’s a definite problem for your bug out plan, in fact, it’s a critical one. Maybe you don’t know all backroads to get you from your current location to your bug-out location (Hint: have you thought about bugging out on the train tracks?)

Step 2: organize your problems in two lists. Get a sheet of paper and a pen and make two columns, one titled “Bug out challenges” and another for bugging in.

Start writing as many problems and challenges as you can (and, again, be honest with yourself). For example, your list could look something like this:

BUG IN CHALLENGES

I don’t have a safe-room

My home isn’t strong enough against an invasion

I have food to last me 3 months but water for only a week

BUG OUT CHALLENGES

I don’t have the physical condition.

I don’t know how to hunt or fish.

My spouse is convinced we should all bug in no matter what.

And on and on. You get the idea.

Next, what I want to you do is circle the things that you think are top priority and put a number next to each circle. (1) next to the most important thing you need to do, (2) to the second most important thing and so on.

Last but not least, you need to start working on number one ASAP. Do it right now if you can. Stop reading more stuff, more articles, cancel today’s gym session and fix that one thing.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a fast speed of implementation when working on your prepping plans. This makes the difference between the prepper that makes slow, sluggish progress and the one that’s prepared to the teeth: taking action.

Taking action is nothing more than a habit which needs to be cultivated… It’s a skill which requires practice. Speaking of which, I have a feeling you’re much less prepared to bug out than to bug in simply because the former requires a wider set of skills in order to survive in the wilderness. Now, I don’t want you to get scared or discouraged because you may think the effort is going to be too big.

See, you don’t have to learn all the bushcraft skills and become proficient at them. That would mean you have to make serious lifestyle adjustments that may not fit your (for now, at least). This is why the list you just make is so important: it tells you which one skill is most important, then the next one and then the next. The more skills you learn, the more your chances of surviving in the wild increase.

Being fit enough to bug out? Check.

Making shelter? Check.

Fishing? Check.

Getting to your bug-out location in record time? Check, check, check.

Forget about using a boomerang to catch ducks or building a fire using an ice cube of God knows what other crazy prepping. Focus on the urgent stuff FIRST, then the important and leave the unimportant for later.
